When it comes to boiler problems, the system will let you know with some strange noises. Each noise can be the cause of a different problem. Clunking/Banging/Rumbling Noises

These sounds are often referred to as kettling noises. Kettling is when mineral deposits begin to accumulate on the boiler’s heat exchanger. This buildup of minerals can restrict or even block the flow of water to the heat exchanger, thus causing the water to evaporate inside the pipe with nowhere for the hot steam to go. 

This can be dangerous– with nowhere for the steam to go, it forces the boiler unit to expand and puts significant pressure on the system. Also, note that kettling can be the result of issues other than mineral buildups such as a faulty thermostat or low water pressure.

In any case, if you hear this sound you should shut down the boiler immediately and call a professional to make repairs. 

Gurgling Noises

This sound can be heard not only in the boiler but in the pipes that are connected to the boiler and run throughout your home. Gurgling noises often come with poor heating in some areas of your home and sometimes no heating at all. 

The cause of these sounds comes from air infiltrating the system. It impedes the flow of the water, which leads to pressure issues and thus uneven heating. Sometimes frozen or leaky pipes can lead to this infiltration of air, and sometimes it’s related to faulty valves. To remedy the issue, an HVAC technician must drain all the air out of the system and also locate the source of any air leak to correct it.

Whistling Noises

This is another noise that could also be caused by kettling. In this case, you can imagine your boiler as a tea kettle– the whistling sound won’t happen unless it is hot enough and there is air trapped inside. Trapped air is the cause of this kettling. 

You can temporarily stop this noise by relieving the pressure by adjusting the bleed valves on your radiator and boiler. However, to resolve the issue, a professional must find the source of the air leak, fix it, and release the rest of the trapped air.
